The Africa Regional Meeting Condemned Euthanasia and Physician-Assisted Suicide
Nigerian Medical Association hosted the World Medical Association Africa Regional Meeting on End of Life Issues.
Alongside Nigeria, medical associations from Cote d’Ivoire, Botswana, Zambia, South Africa and Kenya are part of the WMA’s first-ever meeting since 1947 in Africa to consider the place of death and dying in medicine.
The association comprises 114 national associations and more than 10 million physicians worldwide.
The Africa Regional Meeting condemned euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide. It however recommends greater efforts in palliative care. The Nigerian Medical Association calls on the Nigerian government to increase the number of palliative care centers in the country for qualitative end of life care.
