FORGOT YOUR DETAILS?

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA)

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) is the largest medical association in West Africa, with over 50,000 members from 36 state branches and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and about 19,000 members in the diaspora. In Nigeria, where the population exceeds 200 million, 70% of doctors practice in urban areas, which house only 30% of the population. The National Executive Council (NEC) governs the NMA, making policy decisions and ensuring adherence to the association’s constitution.

Membership is open to any medical or dental practitioner registered under the Medical and Dental Practitioner’s Act CAP 221 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria (1990), upon payment of the annual practicing fee. Although the NMA collaborates with the government, it is often consulted on an ad-hoc basis rather than as a formal right on health issues.

NMA Governance

The National Executive Council (NEC) serves as the NMA's governing body. They hold ultimate authority between annual delegate meetings and have the power to make policy decisions following the association's constitution. This constitution is the supreme document, binding on all NMA entities and members. Any doctor who fulfills the annual practicing fee requirement outlined in Act CAP 221 of the Nigerian Laws (1990, with any amendments) is eligible for membership.
