A NIGHT OF 3Gs.
It was indeed a night of glitz, glamour and glitterati as the Nigerian Medical Association rolled out her drums to celebrate one of her finest, Dr Osahon Enabulele MBBS, MHPM, FWACP, FNMA who was recently elected as the President-elect of the World Medical Association (WMA), the first West African to ever be elected to the highly exalted position.
The President of the Nigerian Medical Association, Prof (Dr) Innocent A O Ujah FNMA, FNAmed, mni in his welcome remarks thanked all the guests and Medical and Dental Practitioners from across the country for honouring the invitation and also gracing the occasion.
He further stated that the reception was put together by the association to honour and celebrate one of her iconic members who has made the association and indeed the country extremely proud.
He attributed Dr Enabulele’s victory to hardwork, dedication, commitment and doggedness and also urged him to use the platform the World Medical Association leadership has provided him to advocate for global health equality and improvement in health care delivery, especially in the developing countries in the world.
The well organised grand reception, which was held at the Ball Room, Hawthorn Suites, Abuja had in attendance the President and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency, Muhammadu Buhari GCFR who was ably represented by the Honourable Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire.
The Chairman of the occasion was His Eminence, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III CFR, mni, the Sultan of Sokoto who was ably represented.
Other dignitaries at the event included all the members of the National Officers Committee (NOC) namely, Dr Rasaaq Ayodele Adebayo (Professor of cardiology)- First Vice President; Dr Daiyabu Alhaji Ibrahim ( Associate Professor of Rheumatology)- Second VicePresident; Dr Ekpe Philips Uche– Secretary General; Dr Saliu Olugbenga Oseni-Deputy Secretary General; Dr Eric Azuka Anazodo-National Treasurer; Dr Pobe Degri Jauro– National Financial Secretary; Dr Aniekeme Aniefiok Uwah JP– National Publicity Secretary; Dr Datonye Dennis Alasia-Acting Editor, NMJ; Dr ( Prince) Francis Adedayo Faduyile ( Professor of Pathology)- Immediate past President, Special Adviser on Health to the Governor of Ondo State and Chairman of the Central Planning Committee and Dr Olumuyiwa Peter Odusote– Immediate Past Secretary General.
Other high profile dignitaries at the event included members of the National Assembly; Past Presidents of the association namely; Dr Edmundson Thompson Akpabio (1984-1988); Dr M.I.L Shehu,mni ( 1991-1993); Prof Wole Atoyebi( 2004-2006); Dr Idris Omede ( 2010-2012) and Prof Mike Ozovehe Ogirima mni( 2016-2018).
To also add colour to the occasion were The Chief Medical Directors (CMDs) of various Federal Tertiary Health Institutions across the country, Past Secretaries General of the association, Chairmen and Secretaries of the various state branches, Members of the National Executive Council, Heads of the affiliates and other invited guests of both the Nigerian Medical Association and the WMA President-elect.
Highlights of the event included the presentation of goodwill messages by The Chairman, Senate Committee on Health, Senator (Dr) Ibrahim Yahaya Oloriegbe; The Chairman, House Committee on Health care Services, Hon (Dr) Yusuf Tanko Sununu; The Honourable Minister of Labour and employment, His Excellency, Senator (Dr) Chris Nwabueze Ngige OON; A Distinguished Medical Elder & President of NMA ( 1984-1988), Dr Edmundson Thompson Akpabio; The Registrar of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN), Dr Tajudeen Sanusi; The Emir of Shonga, HRH(Dr) Haliru Yahaya OON to mention but a few.
The highpoint of the night was the presentation of a scintillating speech by the President-elect of the World Medical Association in which he appreciated the President of NMA and indeed the association for all the support in his long tortuous journey towards the WMA Presidency , for finding him worthy of the great honour and promised not to betray the confidence reposed in him by all Physicians across the world.
The speech by the WMA President-elect was preceeded by the presentation of his citation which was well delivered by Dr Uche Ojinmah( GMG).
Souvenirs were presented by the President, NMA to the WMA President-elect who was accompanied to receive them by his spouse, Joan and two children, Efosa and Victoria.
The historic night was brought to an end with a speech by the Special Guest of Honour, ably represented by the Honourable Minister of Health, while the vote of thanks was done by the Secretary of the Central Planning Committee, Dr Nankling Lamu.
It was indeed a night of the 3Gs.
